Licensing Types

Different types of licensing can be broken into the following categories:

Commercial Rights

Commercial rights enable the buyer to use our images for commercial purposes in communications designed to sell their products or services such as a catalogue, brochure, or on some other form of advertisement.

Non-Commercial Rights

Things like personal websites, blogs, school newsletters, and other media where our image will not be explicitly used as a part of a for-profit/money-making activity come under Non-Commercial rights.

Exclusive Rights

Also known as Serial Rights, this is when we grant proprietary permission to use a specific image to a client. We may or may not want to do this since “exclusive” means we will not be able to resell that image to any other at a later time. The price charged for such a license will reflect this exclusivity.

First Rights

First rights constitute the permission to use the image first off, and then you are free to resell your image at a later time. This image license typically applies to publications, newspapers, and magazines. When we sell photos to magazines, we will consider granting them first rights. This type of photography license will give you the maximum flexibility once the publication has used your photograph.

Non-Exclusive Rights

Non-exclusive rights mean that we can sell our images to more than one person or entity. We may Include a clause wherein our client cannot further resell your images and make sure they understand the difference between exclusive and non-exclusive rights, so as not to make the wrong photo licensing agreement.

One Time Use

This photography licensing contract lets us sell the right to use our image one time only, for one specific purpose to a client.

Rights Managed

“Rights managed” is a little more complicated but is probably the most common way to license an image. Most image licensing websites use this model, wherein images have particular restrictions on use and different fees associated with each use. Rights Managed Images enable both the photographer and the client to arrive at the best fit of usage and exclusivity and do a photography license agreement based on the same. Here the client can use for additional purposes but mention it in the contract. If not, then they have to negotiate with the photographer for the same.

Royalty Free

In Rights Managed, a client has to pay the agreed license fee on the expiry of the license if they want it to be renewed. But in Royalty Free license, the client can use the image for any amount of time-based on the single initial fee. So, if a client wants to use our image on a product 10 million times, he would have to pay a one-time fee to do that. Although there are some restrictions on the usage, overall, the buyer gets almost unlimited usage right from this photography license..

Copyright Free License

A copyright-free license is one type of photography license where the we can give away the copyright of the image for free. We may do so to get publicity from the image. The licensee receives high-quality work which can be used commercially as well after modifications. The images under the copyright free license are entirely free.

How The Sessions Work

As the only headshot photographer mixing human sciences with world class photography, the session is designed to not only give you impactful photographs, but to change the way you see yourself, gaining new insight into your appearance and sense of self identity.

While we do run sessions in the studio on South William Street in Dublin city centre. John does travel the world working with clients. So if you need us to come to you. Just let us know and we can work out the details.

So, for the session we have done everything we can to make the whole booking system as simple, and comfortable as possible. It’s a case of book, follow John’s hilarious directions and pick the images you love. All of the pressure is on him to take the best photographs of you, you have ever had taken.

To make life as easy as possible and to give you as much control as possible we have one primary session in the studio which is a maximum of 1.5 hours. It isn’t school, you can leave whenever you want! In this time, you can be photographed in as many outfits as your little arms will carry into the studio, on multiple backgrounds and with various lighting options to show many sides to your personality.

We do not offer package options as part of the sessions, nobody should be telling you how many images you need and don’t need, or how much you should be spending. This is about you having control. You take only the images you want, need and are within your budget. These are selected during and in finalising the session to give you all the say. (don’t worry, if you are indecisive or not sure, John is there to help you weed out what is not needed)

For Headshot sessions, John works with everything from your mid chest up. So the Zoom call shorts and socks, party on the bottom, business on the top is fine. For portrait sessions John will shoot everything including your shoes with multiple lighting styles, so most definitely bring everything you love wearing. It’s better to be looking at it, than for it.

This is Quality over Quantity ever single time. So John doesn’t shoot 2000 photographs and insist you pick. Far from it! From the time you walk into the studio. John’s first aim is to study how you move, and for what reason. This is then translated into images that show the real you, the version your friends and family know, and love.

During the session we will stop a number of times to review what we are doing, cull out what doesn’t work and work out what is working and not working to make tweaks and changes to posture, clothing and expressions and then at the end we will work through finalising the image selection process.

At the end of the session, you will select the final images you'd like to keep from the best of the best. Images from the sessions are available to purchase from €50 and that includes unlimited licensing of the image for personal use as well as professional retouching to John’s exacting specs.

We will also send you a contact sheet of images that work from the session and will keep these live for 7 days after the shoot, just incase there was that one or two you can’t live without.
